Characters tell colourful tale of life on the marsh
Romney Marsh was given a colourful splash of colour this week as artists flooded in to complete two high-profile projects. In New Romney High Street twin murals of farming life and church symbolism took shape thanks to painters Elena Priestley and Phillippa Goddard. And behind closed doors, more than half of 36 portraits commissioned to show the range of careers on Romney Marsh are already complete. These five examples, above, by Elena Priestley show a train driver, fisherman, butcher, estate agent and school student — do you recognise any of them?
The collection is likely to be exhibited at Sainsbury’s in New Romney, which already boasts five paintings of towers on the Marsh. Behind the project is the IMOS foundation, coordinated by Fairfield Road resident Briony Kapoor, who has poored her own cash into commissioning the works. She said: “The mural painting has been particularly exciting. Its causing passers-by to stop and congratulate the artists and the children have been excited by the animals coming to life.”
